<p>Wallace-Cross Mill is a historic grist mill located at East Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1826, and is a 2 1/2-story, frame building on a stone foundation. It has a gable roof with decorative bargeboard. It has an 11 feet in diameter, 4 feet wide, steel water wheel to run the machinery. The mill was given to York County by its owner in 1979.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The mill was constructed in 1826 and was operated continuously until the 1980s taking its water power from Rambo Run. The mill now a part of the York County Parks system was placed on the Pennsylvania Inventory of Historic Places on February 24, 1977 and the National Register of Historic Places on June 10, 1977. The owner Harry Cross gave the mill to the County of York in 1979. A major renovation of the building, both inside and out, was undertaken by York County Parks in the early 2000s.</p><br>
<p>Since 1840, ownership of the mill changed only four times with one name change from the family name of Wallace to Cross.</p><br>
<p>The restoration focus is the 1950 era; the pinnacle of Harry Cross&#39; career when the mill ran 24 hours a day and seven days a week. All three floors of the mill are open to the public with milling displays and equipment. The exhibits and demonstrations appeal to all ages but especially fifth through seventh grade students of Pennsylvania history.</p><br>
<p>Milling equipment includes a Lieberknecht mill and a hand-powered corn sheller. Also, there is a display on how millstones function and are sharpen. A family-tree display of the Wallace and Cross family can be found in the office.</p><br>
<p>The first floor office where Harry Cross conducted his business gives the impression that he stepped out for a moment. It includes a stove, miller&#39;s desk, work bench and chairs.</p><br>
<p>The mill was originally powered by a wooden overshot wheel with wooden spokes and shaft. In 1922, the wooden wheel was replaced by a steel Fitz wheel, manufactured in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Fitz was the preeminent manufacturer of mill wheels in the 19th century. The original Fitz waterwheel was restored and re-installed through the kindness of Harvey Bradley.</p><br>
<p>Since 2003, the mill has been operated by the Friends of Wallace-Cross Mill. This dedicated group of volunteers host open houses June through October and conducts special tours.</p><br>
<p>Ashley and Bailey Company Silk Mill, also known as Franklin Silk Mill and Leinhardt Brothers Furniture Warehouse, is a historic silk mill located at West York, York County, Pennsylvania. It was built about 1899, and is a three-story, brick building on a rough cut stone foundation. It has a shallow gable roof, a three-story "L"-shaped tower, and a broad one-story ell. Also on the property is a small, flat roofed brick building built about 1925. The mill closed in 1937, then was used as a furniture warehouse into the 1980s.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It should not be confused with the Ashley and Bailey Silk Mill, a similarly constructed factory built about two years earlier, which is also listed on the NRHP and is located about 18 miles east in Marietta, Pennsylvania.</p><br>
<p>Diamond Silk Mill, also known as York Silk Manufacturing Company, is a historic silk mill located at Springettsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania. It was designed by noted architect John A. Dempwolf and built about 1900. The mill is a 3 1/2-story, brick building with heavy timber frame trussing on a stone foundation, and measures 50 feet by 300 feet. It has a hipped roof, and features an octagonal 100-foot high smokestack and decorative corbelled brick cornice in the Romanesque Revival style.</p><br>
<p>In 1910, the mills business had increased such that it was noted by an industry periodical as becoming a full-time operation and hiring additional workers. Silk manufacturing would become one of Yorks most important industries, feeding Lancaster&#39;s manufacture of umbrellas. A decline began with the Great Depression and continued with the introduction of synthetic fibers in the late 1930s, for which most York mills did not have equipment.</p><br>
<p>The mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.</p><br>
<p>West Side Sanitarium, also known as West Side Osteopathic Hospital, is a historic sanitarium complex located at West York, York County, Pennsylvania. The complex consists of four buildings: two large medical buildings and two residences. The Sanitarium was originally built as a hotel in 1905, and doubled in size in 1924, with an addition and rear ell. It is a -story, Dutch Colonial Revival-style brick-and-frame building with a gambrel roof. It measures approximately 110 feet wide and 31 feet deep. The Nurses Home and Sanitarium Annex was built in 1924, also in the Dutch Colonial Revival-style. It is a -story, 28-foot-wide by 30-foot-deep, frame building, expanded in 1931, with a 4-story rear addition measuring 25 feet wide by 34 feet deep. It features a one-story full-width porch with Tuscan order columns. The Doctors Home and Dr. Meisenhelder&#39;s Home and Office were built in 1905, and are in a vernacular Queen Anne style. They are stories tall with cross-gabled, slate-covered roofs and each measure about 20 feet wide by 40 feet deep. Three of the four buildings are connected via underground tunnels. The hospital remained in operation until 1962, after which the buildings housed a business college then home to the Aquarian Church of Universal Service.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.</p><br>
<p>The Norrard  Rocks are a group of small uninhabited granite rocks in the north–western part of the Isles of Scilly, to the west of Bryher and Samson. In 1971 they were designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest  for their breeding seabird colonies and they are permanently closed to landings from boat passengers. The vegetation on the islands is limited by the extreme exposure and only six species of flowering plants have been recorded.</p><br>
<h2>Nature reserve</h2><br>
<p>The islands are largely managed as nature reserves by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, principally for breeding seabirds and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). The only breeding sites for European Storm–petrel in England are on the Isles of Scilly with eleven colonies and an estimated 1475 occupied sites (i.e. breeding pairs). There are only three small breeding colonies on the Norrard Rocks; Mincarlo, Illiswilgig and Castle Bryher with a total of 37 pairs. Other seabirds breeding within the SSSI are Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), Guillemot (Uria aalge), Lesser Black–backed Gull (Larus fuscus) and Herring Gull (L argentatus). The rove beetle (Omalium allardi) has been recorded on several of the islands.</p><br>
<h2>Individual islands and rocks</h2><br>

<h3>Gweal</h3><br>
<p>(Gwithial, place of trees) 5.82 hectare and 32 m high.</p><br>
<p>Gweal is a small rocky island consisting of two hills linked by a boulder beach, just off the west coast of Bryher and is an occasional pupping site for grey seal. Plants recorded are sea beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima), rock sea–spurry (Spergularia rupicola), common scurvygrass (Cochlearia officinalis), thrift (Armeria maritima) and tree mallow (Lavatera arborea).</p><br>
<h3>Scilly Rock</h3><br>
<p>1.98 hectare</p><br>
<p>Scilly Rock is just over 1 km west of Bryher is a large rock, divided by a deep chasm into two parts with a maximum height of 22 m. Each part has a summit named North Cuckoo and South Cuckoo. Landing is difficult and only possible in calm conditions. It is reputedly the island from which the rest of the archipelago gets its name although there is no evidence or explanation for this. Puffin (Fratercula arctica) breed and the only plants recorded are rock sea-spurrey and oraches (Atriplex) species.</p><br>
<h3>Mincarlo</h3><br>
<p>(Men Karleyth, rayfish stone) 1.82 hectare</p><br>
<p>Mincarlo is the southernmost of the group 2 km west of Samson. Several species nest on the island including the largest breeding colony of Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) in the Isles of Scilly as well as Puffin, Great Black–backed Gull (Larus marinus), Razorbill (Alca torda) and Common Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis). The breeding colony of European Storm–petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) occupied 17 sites during the Seabird 2000 survey. Tree mallow, orache, common scurveygrass, rock sea–spurrey and sea beet have all been recorded. The rocks are a main pupping site for grey seal (Halichoerus grypus). The Arachnologist, W S Bristow visited the Isles of Scilly in 1928, 1929 and 1934 and landed on many of the uninhabited islands. On Mincarlo he recorded the following spiders; Trochosa terricola, Oedothorax fuscus, Lepthyphantes tenuis, Dismodicus bifrons, Xysticus kochi and Halorates reprobus which is associated with the nests of seabirds, especially cormorant and shag.</p><br>
<h3>Illiswilgig</h3><br>
<p>(Enys Welsek, grassy island) 0.90 hectare</p><br>
<p>Several species have bred on Illiswilgig, including a small colony of only three pairs of European Storm–petrel, recorded during the Seascape 2000 survey. Plants recorded are tree mallow, thrift, sea beet, rock sea–spurrey, common scurvy grass, orache and English stonecrop (Sedum anglicum). Illiswilgig is a main pupping and haul–out site for grey seal.</p><br>
<h3>Maiden Bower</h3><br>

<p>Only a few gulls breed on Maiden Bower and no plants have been recorded.</p><br>
<h3>Castle Bryher</h3><br>

<p>The Seabird 2000 survey recorded 17 occupied sites of European Storm–petrel. Puffin and gulls also breed on the island and plants recorded are tree mallow, sea beet, rock sea-spurrey, common scurvygrass and orache.</p><br>
<h3>Seal Rock</h3><br>
<p>0.20 hectare</p><br>
<p>An important breeding and haul out site for grey seal and orache is the only plant recorded.</p><br>
<p>Engine Company No. 17 also known as Chemical Company No. 4 and the Brookland Firehouse, is a historic firehouse located at 1227 Monroe Street, NE, Washington, D.C.</p><br>
<p>It was constructed in 1902 and housed an early “chemical company” which fought fires in outlying districts using large soda-acid extinguishers rather than using steam pumpers on the unreliable municipal water supply.</p><br>
<p>The firehouse was innovative at the time of its construction, having a built-in electrical system, and it was designed to make use of the new call box system installed in the neighborhood. It was officially designated Engine Company 17 in 1905.</p><br>
<p>It is built in the Romanesque Revival style with an asymmetrical design with both load-bearing masonry and structural iron. It was likely designed by Municipal Architect John B. Brady. In 2007 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Firehouses of Washington DC MPS.</p><br>
<p>Old Engine Company No. 26, also known as the Langdon Firehouse and Chemical Company No. 3, located at 2715 22nd Street, NE, Washington, D.C. is a historic firehouse built in 1908 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.</p><br>
<p>The firehouse was built in response to a petition by the Northeastern Citizens’ Suburban Association for better fire protection. The Langdon neighborhood where it is located lay outside Washington&#39;s hydrant system, so fires were extinguished with chemicals and the station was originally known as Chemical Company No. 3. The station was renamed Engine Company 26 in the 1920s and closed in 1940.</p><br>
<p>Originally built to house Chemical Company 3, the firehouse was renamed Engine Company 26 in 1913. In 1940, a year after a major restructuring of the fire department, Engine Company 26 moved in with Truck Company 15 at 1340 Rhode Island Avenue, N.E. The city then proposed to adapt the building for use as a library. The Rhode Island Avenue Citizens’ Association countered the proposal with one to use the firehouse as a community center. The city decided, instead, to sell the building to the highest bidder. Shortly thereafter, the building was purchased by a church. It was later resold to the New Memorial Temple of Christ Apostolic Faith, Inc., which currently occupies the property.</p><br>
<p>Codorus Forge and Furnace Historic District, also known as Hellem  Forge, is a historic iron forge and national historic district located at Hellam Township in York County, Pennsylvania. The district includes four contributing buildings, one contributing site, and one contributing structure. The contributing buildings are the iron furnace , charcoal house , ruins of works houses , ironmasters house and furnace office , privy, forge , and ruins of unknown structures. The furnace measures approximately 30 feet square at the base and 12 feet high. The ironmaster&#39;s house is a 2 1/2-story, stuccoed stone building, nine bays wide and one room deep. The Hellem  Forge was first established in 1765.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.</p><br>
<p>The Vigilant Firehouse is a historic building in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. located at 1066 Wisconsin Ave., NW, just north of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Canal Monument.</p><br>
<p>The Vigilant Fire Company was organized in 1817 and this firehouse was built in 1844, making it the oldest extant firehouse in the District of Columbia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.</p><br>
<p>Engine Company 5 was organized as a paid company on April 1, 1867 in this building as "Henry Addison Engine 5." In November 1883 Engine Company 5 moved around the corner to 3210 M Street, NW and the old firehouse was used for manufacturing. There are several stone markers on the site including one placed in 1869 to "Bush the</p><br>
<p>Old Fire Dog."</p><br>
<h2>The Vigilants</h2><br>
<p>The Vigilants were an early private fire company, formed in 1817 with John Kurz as president, James Moore as Secretary and James Corcoran as Treasurer. It was among the oldest fire companies in the District of Columbia, and the oldest in Georgetown. Its first fire engine, called the Vigilant, was bought from John Agnue of Philadelphia. After an 1848 reorganization, the company gradually came under the control of the government, forming Georgetowns Fire company No. 1 in 1867 and the District of Columbias Fire Company No. 5 in 1871. In 1868 the company bought what is believed to be the first steam fire engine in the District of Columbia.</p><br>
<p>The Vigilant fireman developed a reputation for rowdyism.</p><br>
<p>Even saying the name of the company could draw a fine at early meetings of the Georgetown Fire Department, according to Albert Cassedy. "The proceedings of the meeting were so interesting that two members were fined ten cents each for swearing, and a resolution was passed that any member who mentioned the name of the Vigilant Fire Company should be fined 25 cents."</p><br>
<p>A stone tablet sits at ground level between the two main doorways and reads "Bush, the Old Fire Dog, Died of Poison, July 5th 1869, R.I.P." The story was related by Cassedy:</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>A frame building was built on the site sometime before 1829. In 1843 this building was moved across the street to 1069 Wisconsin, where it stood until it was demolished in 1964.</p><br>
<p>The current building was built in 1844 as a two story 22 ft by 44 ft rectangle with a single room on each floor, a square wooden cupola and a gable facing the street. An early addition was a two story shed in the rear, likely used as a stable on the first floor and for hay storage on the second. A single story shed was added to the south, and a two story addition to the north, both of which run the full depth of the building. Including the additions, the building measures 56 ft by 81 ft.</p><br>
<p>On the front gable a stone is inscribed "Vigilant, Instituted, 1817" and below this is a wrought iron "V", likely a trademark for the Vigilants.</p><br>
<p>The "V" also serves as a tension rod tie and is matched by an "S" on the back of the building.</p><br>
<p>After 1883 the building was used for manufacturing, including the Palmer Bottling Works and then McKittrick, Inc., a mattress factory, until about 1970. A 2008 photograph shows the building in use as a restaurant.</p><br>
<p>The Louis J. Bader House and Garden in southeast Portland in the USA state of Oregon is a 2.5-story single dwelling and garden listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in Tudor Revival style in 1922, it was added to the register in 1989.</p><br>
<p>Designed by DeYoung and Roald Architects of Portland, the L-shaped house sits on a 75 by lot opposite Laurelhurst Park. One of several luxurious houses in the neighborhood, it has a steeply pitched hip roof, tall multipaned leaded windows, massive chimneys, stucco cladding, and decorative half-timbers. The interior features oak and mahogany woodwork, Italian marble and tile, large fireplaces, ornate fixtures, and a built-in vacuum system. A ballroom, a billiards room, and a wine cellar are main features of the finished basement. The house also has a partly finished attic with a bedroom, maids room, bathroom, and storage space. George Otten, a landscape engineer for the Oregon State Highway Commission, designed the propertys formal garden, with paths of Italian marble, a sundial, a pergola, and a circular flower bed, among other features, at the rear of the house.</p><br>
<p>Louis Bader, the original owner of the house, was a lumberman from Illinois who moved to Portland in 1910. He became involved in real-estate marketing, particularly in the Laurelhurst district. In 1909, the Ladd Estate Company, influenced by the ideas of Frederick Law Olmsted, had laid out Laurelhurst as a residential subdivision built on the Hazelfern Farm property of William M. Ladd. Bader, who financed construction of some of the houses in Laurelhurst, lived in the house with his wife, Lillie, and children until 1936. In 1938, the Baders sold the house to Merl Margason, a Portland neurologist.</p><br>
<p>Kise Mill Bridge Historic District, also known as Mickleys Mill, is a national historic district located at Newberry Township in York County, Pennsylvania. The district includes one contributing building, two contributing sites, and four contributing structures. It includes the millers house , the buried foundations of a stone grist mill building erected in 1840 on the site of a log mill established about 1790, portions of the head and tailrace, an exposed sawmill foundation, and mill pond dam. The millers house is a 2 1/2-story, three bay, banked sandstone dwelling. An early 19th century log house was moved to the site in 1973, and attached to the millers house.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Also in the district is the Kise Mill Bridge, listed in 1988.</p><br>
<p>McCalls Ferry Farm, also known as the Robert and Matthew McCall Farm, Atkins-Trout Farm, and Kilgore Farm, is a historic farm and national historic district located at Lower Chanceford Township in York County, Pennsylvania. The district includes six contributing buildings and two contributing sites. The buildings are the farmhouse , Sweitzer barn , frame corn barn , tobacco barn , milk house , and chicken house . The farmhouse is a banked Pennsylvania German vernacular dwelling built of stone and coated in stucco. It measures 40 feet wide and 30 feet deep, and has a slate covered gable roof. The sites are the stone foundation of a scale house  and the ruins of a small dwelling .</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.</p><br>
<p>Phu Ruea , is a 1365 m high mountain in Loei Province, Thailand. It is located in Phu Ruea District, giving its name to the district. This mountain is part of the Phetchabun Mountains, a massif forming a natural boundary between North Thailand and Isaan. The peak rises 7 km north of Highway 203, between Loei town and Phetchabun and it is a good lookout to view the Mekong and the Hueang River valleys. The name of the mountain comes from the fact that it looks like a boat  upside down from certain angles.</p><br>
<p>The Phu Ruea High Altitude Agricultural Research Station and the Phu Ruea National Park are located in the area around the mountain. The park borders Sainyabuli Province in Laos at its northern end. Most of the mountain is covered in mixed evergreen forest. The area around the mountain is part of the Luang Prabang montane rain forests ecoregion.</p><br>
<p>Truck House No. 13, also known as the Trinidad Firehouse is a historic firehouse located at 1342 Florida Ave. NE, Washington, D.C. It was built in 1925 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>It was built in the Colonial Revival style as a prototype new firehouses in the District of Columbia, though the plan was not repeated.</p><br>
<p>Architect Albert Harris supervised the design, but local architects Parks and Baxter are also often attributed.</p><br>
<p>Truck Company 13 was organized on December 9, 1925 and has served ever since at this location. Its original equipment was a 1925 Seagrave 75&#39; aerial ladder truck.</p><br>
<p>In 1940 Engine Company No. 10 moved from its old firehouse on Maryland Avenue to this location. Engine 10, known as "the Dime," was the busiest engine company in the nation from 1991 to 2003.</p><br>
<p>The Ontonagon School is a former school building located at 301 Greenland Road in Ontonagon, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 25, 2011.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Ontonagon School was originally constructed in 1912 as a high school, and was designed by architect Derrick Hubert. The school was officially opened at the start of the 1913-1914 school year. Much of the building was rebuilt following a fire in 1929.</p><br>
<p>In 1938, a two-story addition for elementary schooling, designed by architect A.B. Nelson of the Warren S. Holmes Company, was constructed next to the original high school building. The addition was connected to the original building on the southeast side via an annex corridor.</p><br>
<p>A third single-story section of the building was constructed in 1967 to expand the school to meet the needs of the local population. The third building section was connected to the second section on the southeast side.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Ontonagon School consists of three connected buildings, constructed in 1912, 1938 and 1967. The 1938 addition is the most historically significant. This addition, constructed to house grade school children, was designed to be child-friendly. The building features stained-glass art, elaborate floor and wall tiling depicting fairytale characters, built-in child-sized benches, and reversing blackboards. The kindergarten room features a gingerbread entryway with coachlamps on each side, tilework with the Big Bad Wolf chasing the Three Little Pigs, and an Art Deco fish pond with fountain. On the second floor is a small children&#39;s theatre with a stage.</p><br>
<p>The school district discontinued use of this building after 2010 when the K-12 population was consolidated into the Ontonagon Area Senior High Building (701 Parker Ave.) that was constructed in 1967 and subsequently remodeled in 2010 to accommodate the K - 5 students, the last students to occupy the old building at 301 Greenland Road.</p><br>
<p>The Crown of Scotland is a hill in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.</p><br>
<p>At a relatively small elevation from the surrounding peaks, it is situated to the north of the Devil&#39;s Beef Tub and the town of Moffat.</p><br>
<p>The hills unusual name derives from the alliance made between Robert the Bruce and James Douglas, Lord of Douglas upon its summit in 1306, following the formers murder of the Red Comyn at Greyfriars kirk in Dumfries, and when Bruce was making for Glasgow to meet with Bishop Wishart.</p><br>
<h2>Development</h2><br>
<p>In 2008 a planning application was made to erect 36 wind turbines concentrated on the summit and its surrounding peaks. This application was rejected following much local objection. Currently (December 2011) a revised plan for 24 turbines is in process.</p><br>
<p>Muddy Creek Forks Historic District is a national historic district located at the Village of Muddy Creek Forks in East Hopewell, Fawn, and Lower Chanceford Townships in York County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 12 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 5 contributing structures. The buildings and structures were constructed between about 1800 and 1935. The buildings include the general store, six houses, a mill, grain elevator, warehouse, and Sweitzer barn. Most of the buildings incorporate Late Victorian style details. The structures are two bridges, a corn crib, a weigh station, and a mill race. The site is the site of a former mill and mill pond.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<p>The old Acton High School, also known as the McCarthy-Towne Elementary School, is a historic school building at 3 Charter Road in Acton, Massachusetts. Built in 1925, this Renaissance Revival building served as the towns high school for 30 years, and then as an elementary school for 45. It was the towns first purpose-built high school. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former Acton High School is set at the northeast corner of Charter Road and Massachusetts Avenue (Massachusetts Route 111) near the geographic center of the town, and adjacent to a number of its other school buildings. It is a two-story brick building in a U shape, with Renaissance Revival styling. Its south-facing front facade has a stepped parapet, obscuring a flat roof. Its central block is fifteen bays wide, with two projecting entry pavilions. The entrances are framed by simple molding and topped by segmented-arch pediments, with narrow windows in the pavilion above. Bands of limestone trim separate the first and second stories, and the second story and the cornice. The building corners are quoined with limestone blocks.</p><br>
<p>The building was designed by Boston architect/engineer John H. Bickford, and built in 1925. It was the town&#39;s first purpose-built high school building, its previous high school classes (begun in 1883) having been rotated through other school buildings in the system. The building served in that capacity for thirty years. It then served another 45 years as an elementary school, during which time a substantial addition was made to bring the building to its present configuration. The school was finally closing in 2000. It has been converted to residences.</p><br>
<p>The Crooked Creek Bridge is a concrete arch bridge that carries USA Route 62 Spur over Crooked Creek in Pyatt, Arkansas. Built in 1923, the bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 2010.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Although a town site had existed at this bend of Crooked Creek since the 1870s, Pyatt became a town in 1904 upon completion of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway tracks through the area. As the cotton industry grew in the area and roads began to spring up around Marion County, a connecting road became necessary to give Pyatt access to the main route in the county. Completion of the Crooked Creek Bridge gave Pyatt access to the modern USA Route 62 via a spur route.</p><br>
<h2>Design</h2><br>
<p>The closed spandrel arch design became popular during the City Beautiful movement in the 1900s. Concrete became a popular bridge material at the time as well, in an effort to imitate many Roman bridges thought to be beautiful.</p><br>
<p>Wallis Lake, an open and trained wave dominated barrier estuary, is located within the Mid-Coast Council local government area in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. Wallis Lake is located adjacent to the towns of Forster and Tuncurry, and adjacent to the east coast, about 308 km north of Sydney.</p><br>
<h2>Features and location</h2><br>
<p>Drawing its catchment from within Wallingat National Park and the Wallamba River, Coolongolook River, and Pipers Creek, Wallis Lake has a catchment area of 1,197 km&sup2; and a surface area of 99 km&sup2;. When full, Wallis Lake covers an area of around 10,000 hectare, is approximately 25 km long, with a width of 9 km.</p><br>
<p>Hadleys Island lies within Wallis Lake, near the confluence of the Wallamba and Coolongolook rivers.</p><br>
<p>The waterways surrounding Wallis Lake are well known for oyster production.</p><br>
<p>Lake Wallis was named in honour of James Wallace, a soldier of the 46th Regiment.</p><br>
<p>The Smith–Elisha House, sometimes known just as the Elisha House or the Christmas Tree House, is located on West Main Street  in Aspen, Colorado, United States. It is a wood frame structure in the Queen Anne architectural style built in the late 19th century. In 1989 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>It is considered one of the best Queen Anne houses in the city. Eben Smith, its original owner, was a mine owner during Aspen&#39;s boomtown years who worked to improve mine safety. Mansor Elisha, its other titular owner, was an accidental owner of the Hotel Jerome who later became mayor. Since those times it has remained intact.</p><br>
<h2>Buildings and grounds</h2><br>
<p>The house is located on the north side of West Main, between North Second and North Third streets. The neighborhood, two blocks west of downtown Aspen, is primarily residential, with multiple-unit dwellings of more modern construction giving way to the older single-family houses of the city&#39;s West End. Terrain is level, midway between the slopes of Aspen Mountain to the south and the Roaring Fork River to the north. There is, in addition to the house, a barn and carriage house in the rear with a cupola on its cross-gabled roof. The barn is considered a contributing resource to the Register listing.</p><br>
<p>A block to the north is the D.E. Frantz House, also listed on the Register. The Matthew Callahan Log Cabin, one of the few original such structures left in Aspen, is a block away on South Third Street, and Pioneer Park is to the northwest at the same distance. Both, too, are listed.</p><br>
<p>The main house is a two-and-a-half-story wood frame structure on a stone foundation. It is irregular in plan and topped by several steeply pitched shingled gables, with a tall decorative chimney piercing the rear roof. The first story is sided in clapboard while the upper stories are done in shingles.</p><br>
<p>A shed-roofed porch wraps around the southeast corner, where the main entrance is located, ending at a large projecting bay on the east facade. It is supported by turned posts with latticework between them at the upper ends and a simple balustrade at the deck. In front of it the steps are sheltered by a gabled hood with a shingled pediment supported by similar posts. A decorative wooden railing runs up them.</p><br>
<p>At the second story the shingled section flares outward slightly at the bottom. Above the main entrance is a hip roofed balcony also supported by decorative wooden posts. It is topped by a small gabled dormer window on the attic level. Another dormer tops the projecting bay.</p><br>
<p>Most windows on the house are one-over-one double-hung sash with plain wooden surrounds. In the dormers, and on the east facet of the projecting bay, the windows are paired. A large oculus with crossed muntins and keystones is in the western gable apex on the south (front) facade, above a triple window. Two paired casement windows with decorative patterned glass are on the second story just south of the projecting bay, the only windows on that side of the second story.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In the late 1880s, Aspen was booming. Its mines produced silver in quantity, selling primarily to the USA government, required by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act to buy the metal to support the dollar. What had a decade earlier started as a primitive encampment of tents and log cabins was now a bustling settlement of almost 10,000 with luxury hotels and other amenities. Those who had grown rich from the boom built large houses for themselves in the city&#39;s West End.</p><br>
<p>Eben Smith was one. His mines in Aspen were among many he owned or co-owned in the state, and he did a lot to improve safety in the industry. Around 1890 he erected the house in the then-popular Queen Anne style. Two years later he left the city.</p><br>
<p>The Panic of 1893 ended the city&#39;s early growth. Congress repealed the Sherman Act to combat inflation. With the market no longer so sustained, the price of silver dropped and many mines became unprofitable and closed. Miners then went to work elsewhere. The houses that had been built fell vacant as the city entered a period now known as its "quiet years" when its population dwindled to ultimately less than a thousand by 1930.</p><br>
<p>During this period, Mansor Elisha, a Lebanese immigrant, came to Aspen. He managed to thrive despite the economy, and in 1911 became the owner of the Hotel Jerome, the only hotel in the city left from the early years. He did well enough that he was able to buy Smith&#39;s house for his family, preserving it from the neglect which led many other old buildings from the 1880s in the city to burn or collapse.</p><br>
<p>Elisha and his descendants owned or operated the Jerome for the next 50 years. During the latter half of that time, prosperity gradually began to return to Aspen as it developed into a ski resort and popular retreat for celebrities and corporate executives. The Aspen Skiing Company leased the hotel and let Laurence Elisha, Mansor&#39;s son, manage it until his death in 1968.</p><br>
<p>His widow Svea sold the hotel but kept the house until her own death in the mid-1980s. At that time, her estate objected to its listing on the Register along with other properties in the city&#39;s multiple property submission, and it was not listed until 1989. The following year it won an award from Colorado Preservation for excellence in the adaptive reuse of a residential structure. It was remodeled and has been used as offices for several businesses since then.</p><br>
<p>Fairy Bridge, Isle of Man  is a small bridge over the Santon Burn in the Isle of Man, located on the primary A5 Port Erin to Douglas road, at grid reference 305720, on the parish boundary between Santon and Malew .</p><br>
<p>A superstition is to greet the fairies (an English term for the Mooinjer Veggey ("Little People"); historically never called fairies or ferrish by the Manx and not of similar disposition to the English fairies) when crossing the Fairy Bridge; it is considered unlucky not to greet them.</p><br>
<p>From the 1950s it was reportedly the custom to advise a visitor of the myth on the journey south from Douglas or north from the airport. This was timed so that one was required to say "Good morning Fairies!" just as the teller and his guest(s) crossed the Fairy Bridge. This would subsequently be repeated by the same or other tellers, leaving visitors perplexed as to the tellers&#39; beliefs.</p><br>
<p>Like many local superstitions on the Isle of Man, the Fairy Bridge myth is changing with the influx of new residents. It has always been a whimsical practice, never taken too seriously by residents, despite food writer that taxi drivers will stop if the passenger does not greet the fairies.</p><br>
<p>Motorcycle racers and spectators at the annual TT and Manx Grand Prix races tend to take the ritual seriously, in most cases making a point of visiting the bridge before setting up for practice and the races. In an example of confirmation bias, mishaps and crashes are readily attributed to the fairies&#39; displeasure; likewise lucky escapes.</p><br>
<p>It has been suggested that the location was on the boundaries of the land of the nearby Rushen Abbey, and the greeting is a folk memory of crossing oneself at the sight of the crucifix marking the boundary of the monastery&#39;s land. This superstition may possibly have arisen at this location during the 19th century in response to the large number of tourists visiting the Island.</p><br>
<h2>Alternative Fairy Bridge</h2><br>
<p>The now commonly known "Real" Fairy Bridge, shown as the "Fairy Bridge" on old Ordnance Survey maps, is located in the parish of Braddan across the Middle River near the footpath from Oakhill to Kewaigue.54&deg;08&prime;15&Prime;N latitude, 4&deg;31&prime;19&Prime;W longitude</p><br>
<p>The Fog Bay and Finniss River Floodplains comprise the floodplain of the lower reaches of the Finniss River with the adjoining intertidal mudflats of Fog Bay in the Top End of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is an important site for waterbirds.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The 789 km&sup2; site lies on the north-western coast of the Northern Territory, some 65 km south-west of Darwin. The floodplain is mainly seasonally inundated paperbark and sedge swamps. The bay is dominated by sand, salt and mudflats with a shoreline of mangroves and mangrove-lined channels, grassed dunes and patches of samphire.</p><br>
<h2>Fog Bay</h2><br>
<p>Fog Bay is a bay of the Australian coast, located approximately 65 km south-west of Darwin, Northern Territory.</p><br>
<p>The shallow bay is approximately 25 km wide and extends from Native Point at its north-east end to Point Jenny to the south-west. The town of Dundee is at the north-east end of the bay. The coastline includes the mouth of the Finniss River, which enters around the middle of the bay. The coast north of the mouth is mostly sandy flats, whereas south of the Finnis the coastline is made up of intertidal mud flats backed by mangroves.</p><br>
<p>The Fog Bay and Finniss River Floodplains have been identified as an Important Bird Area.</p><br>
<h2>Birds</h2><br>
<p>The site has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. The floodplain supports over 1% of the world populations magpie geese and pied herons. The mudflats of Fog Bay, extending from Point Jenny to Stingray Head, support over 1% of the world populations of great knots and grey-tailed tattlers, among the maximum of 35,000 waders, or shorebirds, recorded. Other waders for which the site is at least sometimes important include black-tailed godwits, greaters and lesser sand plovers, grey plovers, Terek sandpipers, and Far Eastern curlews. Other waterbirds that have been recorded in relatively large numbers include little pied and little black cormorants, darters, royal spoonbills, glossy, straw-necked and Australian white ibises, great and intermediate egrets, plumed and wandering whistling ducks, grey teals, Pacific black ducks, and brolgas.</p><br>
<p>The Bridge River Vent is a volcanic crater in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is located west of Bralorne on the northeastern flank of the Mount Meager massif. With an elevation of, it lies on the steep northern face of Plinth Peak, a high volcanic peak comprising the northern portion of Meager. The vent rises above the western shoulder of the Pemberton Valley and represents the northernmost volcanic feature of the Mount Meager massif.</p><br>
<p>At least eight volcanic vents compose the Meager massif, with the Bridge River Vent being the most recent to form. It is the only vent of the massif to exhibit volcanic activity in the past 10,000 years and one of the several vents in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt to erupt since the end of the last glacial period. The crater constitutes a bowl-shaped depression overlain by glacial ice and volcanic debris that were deposited during volcanic activity. Its breached northern rim has been a pathway for lava and ash flows that have traveled throughout the nearby Pemberton Valley.</p><br>
<h2>Eruptive history</h2><br>
<h3>Background</h3><br>
<p>Volcanic activity of the Mount Meager massif is caused by subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate under the North American Plate at the Cascadia subduction zone.</p><br>
<h3>400s BC eruption</h3><br>
<p>The Bridge River Vent was formed during an onset of eruptive activity about 2,350 years ago that ended a long period of dormancy at the Mount Meager massif. Substantially, the Bridge River event was explosive in nature, ranging from Plinian to Peléan activity. It had similarities to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the USA state of Washington and the continuous eruption of Soufrière Hills on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. The eruption, which was likely VEI-5 in nature, included a series of eruptive episodes that created a variety of volcanic deposits. They are exposed in cliff sections near the 209 km long Lillooet River and comprise the Pebble Creek Formation.</p><br>
<h4>Plinian phase</h4><br>
<p>At the start of the eruption, a large Plinian column rose above the Bridge River Vent, creating its bowl-shaped volcanic crater. This explosive eruption might have been followed by the collapse of a former lava dome based on the existence of a thick cover of welded vitrophyric breccia. The Plinian column is estimated to have had a height of to. Its height has been calculated by comparing the size and density of rugged pumice fragments away from the vent area. However, the eruption column was likely higher than the estimated data indicates because it does not include the highest portions of the column. During this time of the eruption, tephra spread into the stratosphere and parts of the mushroom-shaped ash column collapsed, devastating nearby areas with heavy pyroclastic fall which deposited tephra on Meager&#39;s steep flanks. A pyroclastic fall deposit up to thick consists largely of light grey pumice grains that range in diameter from to. About 1–5% of the pumice grains contain white to dark grey bands.</p><br>
<p>About 1–2% of the grains comprising the thick pyroclastic fall deposit were derived from the older Plinth Assemblage as the energetic Plinian column blasted the surrounding rock of Plinth Peak. These clasts are relatively minor to the abundant pumice grains. At least four other minor grain types make up less than 1% of the pyroclastic fall deposit. The most common is a somewhat inflated grey grain petrographically similar to the grey pumice grains. Ignimbrite forms a less common, but significant genetic grain. It includes level to extremely rounded pieces of white pumice that are normally to in diameter and are enclosed by a red to pink, fine-grained, consistent matrix. Another grain consisting of extremely rounded but glacially dissected quartz monzonite, are another small but widespread element of the pyroclastic fall deposit. The most infrequent of the four minor grain types are understood to be heated and burnt clay-rich soil. All four minor grain types are widespread in the pyroclastic fall deposit and are not restricted to any one portion or extent.</p><br>
<p>Strong high-altitude winds carried material east-northeasterly from the Plinian column to as far as Alberta, away from the vent to produce a large volcanic ash deposit. Remnants of this catastrophe are exposed south and east of the volcanic vent along the Lillooet River. At the vent area, the thickness of this pyroclastic flow ranges from to.</p><br>
<h4>Peléan phase</h4><br>
<p>After the first major pyroclastic flow, a hot block-and-ash flow was erupted off the face of an advancing lava dome. This deposited of brittlely jointed welded breccia on top of the first major pyroclastic flow deposit. The slightly divided joints associated with the block-and-ash flow deposit range in a pattern from irregular to radial, indicating that the block-and-ash flow was rapidly quenched by water. These features might represent the first evidence of water reaction during the eruption and are mainly located near the high Keyhole Falls along the Lillooet River. The welded block-and-ash flow deposit is enclosed by a grey weathering glassy matrix.</p><br>
<p>The second and final major pyroclastic flow occurred when another pulse of gas-rich magma was erupted. This deposited of tephra on the earlier block-and-ash flow. In contrast to the first major pyroclastic flow, this pyroclastic flow was smaller and less energetic. Also, no burnt wood has been observed. Fine-grained volcanic ash, crystal and rock fragments comprise the matrix of the second major pyroclastic flow deposit.</p><br>
<p>A second hot welded block-and-ash flow erupted off the face of an advancing lava dome into the Lillooet River valley, forming a pyroclastic dam at least high. This block-and-ash flow deposited irregularly welded, monolithologic and vitophyric breccia that ranges from thick at Keyhole Falls to thick between two creeks further downstream. About 50% of the breccia consists of thick black glassy angular blocks of porphyritic lava, some of which are flow banded. The breccia grains range in size from a few centimetres to about in length. Infrequent welded breccia grains in the thickest portion of the block-and-ash flow deposit adjacent to Keyhole Falls include grey spherulites and lithophysae.</p><br>
<p>The third and final block-and-ash flow deposited breccia more than thick. It was also erupted off the face of an advancing lava dome. In most locations the deposit is deeply eroded and forms recessively weathered slopes covered with vegetation.</p><br>
<h4>Failure of volcanic dam</h4><br>
<p>Damming of the Lillooet River from the second block-and-ash flow resulted in the creation of a lake just upstream. This lake continued to fill when the third block-and-ash flow was erupted, eventually reaching a maximum elevation of and a depth of at least. As the lake continued to rise from inflow of the Lillooet River, the variably welded, poorly indurated pyroclastic dam failed catastrophically, releasing lake water down the Pemberton Valley to produce an outburst flood. Large volcanic blocks derived from the pyroclastic dam were carried downstream for where they were deposited in the water-saturated debris.</p><br>
<p>Additionally, the pyroclastic dam was still hot and poorly indurated when the flood waters rapidly cut through the pyroclastic material. Headward erosion of the dam created a wide and long canyon. The flood was significant enough to leave volcanic blocks above the pre-existing valley floor downstream of the dam failure. However, the flood was not long or large enough to complete headward erosion through the entire sequence of pyroclastic material. Subsequent erosion by the Lillooet River has created a wide and deep gorge in the competent portion of the pyroclastic dam from which Keyhole Falls cascades down.</p><br>
<h4>Extrusion of lava flow</h4><br>
<p>The final event of the eruption was the extrusion of a small thick glassy dacite lava flow. Although it has been heavily overgrown by vegetation, its original form is still well preserved. This lava flow was poor in volcanic gas, indicating that minor or no explosivity occurred when it was erupted. It is long and varies in thickness from to. Subsequent erosion of the lava flow by Fall Creek has created a waterfall.</p><br>
<h3>Later eruptions</h3><br>
<p>In 1977, J. A. Westgate of the University of Toronto suggested that a smaller eruption may have occurred at the Bridge River Vent after the eruption 2,350 years ago, sending tephra to the southeast. A tephra deposit overlying the Bridge River Ash at Otter Creek shows strong genetic relationships with the Bridge River Ash, differing only by its absence of biotite. In earlier publications, this tephra is classified as part of the Bridge River Ash. However, it has been dated to be about 2,000 radiocarbon years old, indicating that this tephra is a few hundred years younger than the Bridge River Ash. Apparent absence of biotite and occurrence well to the south of the Bridge River Ash likewise favour a separate identity.</p><br>
<p>Superior Creek was a stream draining into Lake Ontario in the former village of Mimico, Ontario, Canada.</p><br>
<p>It was approximately 3 kilometers long, with headwaters near the present intersection of Kipling Avenue and The Queensway.</p><br>
<p>The lower reaches of the creek had become polluted, and were buried in a sewer in 1915.</p><br>
<p>In 1954 citizens of Mimico living in newly built houses near the upper reaches complained that the creek flooded, and lobbied to have the creek replaced by storm sewers, and a study was prepared. According to HTO: Toronto&#39;s water from Lake Iroquois to lost rivers to low-flow toilets, the creek was buried around 1965.</p><br>
<p>The creek west of Superior Creek is Jackson Creek, while the creek east of Superior Creek is Mimico Creek.</p><br>
<p>Cholapandiyapuram  or Cholavandipuram or Cholapandipuram is a 1 sq. kilometre village in Tirukkoyilur  taluk in Villuppuram  district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The major occupation of the people living at this place is agriculture. In 2011 it had a population of 1,000 people.</p><br>

<p>Town buses depart from Tirukkoyilur bus stand (bus no: 5, 20) to Rishivandiyam go through Cholapandiyapuram. Otherwise, one can alight at Ariyur Koot road bus stop (all buses going from Tirukkoyilur to Ulundurpettai and Kallakurichi ) and can take shared auto.</p><br>
<h2>About the village</h2><br>
<p>Cholapandiyapuram village has more than 1000 years old heritage. This village was a Jain centre during the 10th century C.E.</p><br>
<h2>Andimalai</h2><br>
<p>The attractive feature of this village is the presence of hillock called Andimalai with Jain caves, stone beds, inscriptions and sculptures. There are 25 stone beds and some of the stone pillows of the beds were carved semicircular. The 23rd Thirthankarar of Jainism, Parshwanathar or Parshva, Bahubali or Gomateshwara and Mahavira were nicely carved on the rock. An inscription said these carvings were made at the behest of Sriveli Konkaraiyar Puddhadigal. Another inscription was in the form of a poem: it mentions that a local chieftain, Siddhavadavan alias Sethirayan, donated Panaipadi village for the worship of these Jaina tirthankaras during the second regnal year (952 A.D.) of Chola king Gandaraditya. Statues of Dharmadevi and Iyakki was placed separately in the hill. Also two statues of Adinathar or Rishabha taken from nearby villages are kept in the hill. Inside a cave, a stone seat was found which possibly for a Jain monk where he sat and teach the students.</p><br>
<h2>Padiyendhal</h2><br>
<p>Padiyendhal is a rock art site in a small cave located backside of Andimalai. Actually the name "Padiyendhal" refers to the nearby village. Local people call this cave as "Irulan Kal". On the roof of the cave, ancient paintings of horse, bow and arrow structures are found. The symbols found in the roof and the side walls of the cave are similar to that of found in Indus valley civilization</p><br>
<h2>Pictures</h2><br>
<p>The Hyland Bay and Moyle Floodplain comprises the floodplain of the lower reaches of the Moyle and Little Moyle Rivers, and the adjoining mudflats of Hyland Bay, on the west coast of the Top End of the Northern Territory of Australia. The site lies about 200 km south-west of Darwin and 30 km north-east of the Aboriginal community of Wadeye. It is an important site for waterbirds.</p><br>
<h2>Birds</h2><br>
<p>The site has been identified as a 1,062 km&sup2; Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because the floodplain supports up to 500,000 magpie geese and over 1% of the world population of pied herons. The intertidal mudflats of the bay support large numbers of waders, or shorebirds, especially great knots. Other waterbirds recorded breeding in the area in relatively large numbers include egrets, little pied cormorants, nankeen night herons and royal spoonbills.</p><br>
<p>The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Depot is a railroad station located between Suffolk and Lowell Streets in Ironwood, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railroad line was laid through what is now Ironwood in 1884. At the time there were almost no people in the settlement, but the railroad and the surrounding virgin timber made the city a boomtown, which swelled to 11,000 people by 1892. but it quickly proved inadequate. In 1892, the company built this brick replacement at a cost of $18,000. In 1983, the former depot was purchased by the Downtown Ironwood Development Authority. It currently houses the Ironwood Area Historical Society.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Depot in Ironwood is a red brick and sandstone structure</p><br>
<p>The two buildings have vertically laid brown sandstone slabs on the bottom of the walls, rising to a height of about 5-1/2 feet. The walls are brick above. The depot&#39;s lower story has simple rectangular doorways and windows with one-over-one double hung windows. A triple-window bay which once housed ticket windows projects from the center of the trackside facade. The small second floor has three round-head window with sandstone sills, deeply recessed between sandstone</p><br>
<p>columns with foliated capitals. The projecting eaves of the main hipped roof are supported by large curved wooden brackets.</p><br>
<p>The interior of the main depot contains a train dispatcher&#39;s quarters and locker room on one side, a ticket office in the center, and a passenger waiting room</p><br>
<p>and rest rooms on the other side. The walls are plastered and painted white, and the floors are wooden. Many of the interior details are original, including the wainscoting, window trim, baseboards, and ceiling molding. The second story originally housed a railroad agent&#39;s office and small store room. The baggage structure has three rooms, one of which is the small addition.</p><br>
<p>The Gilliam and Bisbee Building is an historic commercial structure in Heppner in the USA state of Oregon. Built in 1919 for the Gilliam and Bisbee Hardware Company to replace a building destroyed by fire in 1918, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.</p><br>
<p>The two-story rectangular building measures 50 by, and it has a full basement. The foundation and walls are made of concrete. The front facade is of tan-colored brick paired with darker brown brick above the storefront, its window pairs, and its decorative horizontal corbel courses. Strong vertical elements include pilasters that extend above the roof line and are topped with imitation chimney caps.</p><br>
<p>Originally, the first floor contained retail space, a stock room, a business office, a plumbing shop, a freight elevator (which served both floors and the basement), stairways, and perhaps a leased office. An open display space for farm implements occupied the second floor, also the likely site of a restroom.</p><br>
<p>Members of the Gilliam and Bisbee families, arriving in the 1860s, were among the earliest settlers in the region. Two members of the second generation, Timothy Bisbee and Frank Gilliam, both involved in stock raising, became brothers-in-law in 1882 and by 1889 were in business together as the Gilliam and Bisbee Hardware Company. Subsequent generations of both families worked in the store through the late 1950s.</p><br>
<p>The Heppner Hotel is a building in Heppner, in the USA state of Oregon. Designed by architect John V. Bennes and built in 1919, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.</p><br>
<p>When it opened in 1920, the 48-room hostelry was the city&#39;s only hotel. A flash flood along Willow Creek destroyed one former hotel in 1903, and fire destroyed the other in 1918. Originally named the Hotel St. Patrick, it was soon renamed the Heppner Hotel.</p><br>
<p>Measuring 62 by at ground level, the hotel covers nearly all of the downtown lot on which it rests. As of 1982, it was the largest and tallest commercial structure in the city.</p><br>
<p>The three-story building is made of hollow clay tile and concrete with stucco facades and frameless windows. The west facade of the ground floor had a narrow central bay for the main entrance, and it was flanked by structural bays and bay windows opening on interior commercial space. The architecturally plain hotel had little exterior or interior decoration; however, the rooms on the second and third floors were capacious, and three-fourths of them had private baths.</p><br>
<p>The Morrow County Courthouse is a building in Heppner in the USA state of Oregon. Built in 1902&ndash;03, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It was among the early commissions of architect Edgar M. Lazarus.</p><br>
<p>Built on the site of an earlier courthouse made of wood, the two-story building is made of locally quarried dark blue basalt and lighter trim stone from quarries near Elgin and Baker. Features include a hip roof, a central entrance pavilion, and a domed cupola with clock faces on three sides.</p><br>
<p>The courthouse site is elevated above much of the rest of the city, and this saved the building from severe flood damage in 1903. County officials had moved into the building in March, and in June much of Heppner was destroyed and 247 people killed by a flash flood on Willow Creek, which bisects the city.</p><br>
<p>Zubair Group, Al Zubair Group or Zubayr Group  is a group of 10 major volcanic islands, on top of an underlying shield volcano in the Red Sea, which reach a height of 191 m  above sea level. The volcano has continued to erupt in historic times. The islands currently belong to Yemen.</p><br>
<h2>Islands</h2><br>
<p>The largest island is Zubair, which is one of the younger islands. Other young islands are Center Peak, Saba, Haycock, and Saddle. Saddle Island has had eruptions in historic times.</p><br>
<p>The volcano was built on a NNW-SSE rift line. It began with a period of explosive eruptions, then a period of quiescecence followed, during which time marine erosion took place. This was followed by a period of both explosive and effusive eruption activity, building up the Stark and Barren group of islands that exist today. This period of eruption has continued into historic times.</p><br>
<h2>Historic eruptions</h2><br>
<h3>1824 eruption</h3><br>
<p>A small (VEI 2) eruption took place in 1824 on Saddle Island, with low level explosive activity. An eruption may have taken place on August 14, 1846, but this event is uncertain.</p><br>
<h3>2011-2012 eruption</h3><br>
<p>A volcanic eruption took place 19 December 2011 from the seabed. Satellite images showed a plume in the sea between Haycock and Rugged Islands. Fishermen reported lava fountaining 30 m above the sea. The submarine eruption has built a new island in the group, in between Rugged and Haycock Islands. Water entering the vent had created Surtseyan activity resulting in the release of steam and an ash plume.</p><br>
<p>As of 12 January 2012, the new island had grown to around 530 by 710 meters (1,700 by 2,300 feet) across and had begun effusive activity, It was named Sholan Island.</p><br>
<p>Satellite images taken on 15 January 2012 showed that the eruption had stopped, leaving a newborn island behind. A satellite photo taken on February 15 shows the new island has a crater lake.</p><br>
<h3>2013 eruption</h3><br>
<p>On September 28, 2013 a new submarine eruption began southwest of the 2011-2012 eruption site, with water discoloration and a significant steam plume reported. Scientists estimated that the eruption was taking place less than 100 m below the surface, meaning that a new surtseyan phase was a possibility. The activity at the site continued into October, with a large steam plume visible on satellite and confirmed by video from locals. In late October, a new island emerged from the ocean.</p><br>
<p>This island has been named Jadid Island while the one created in 2011 has been named Sholan Island. By the summer of 2016 both islands were no longer visible on satellite photos.</p><br>
<h2>Visitor attractions</h2><br>
<p>Diving, sightseeing, wildlife viewing and volcano trekking are popular activities for tourists and visitors. The islands are uninhabited.</p><br>
<p>The Bailey and Massingill General Store is a historic commercial building in downtown Lakeview, Oregon, United States. Lakeviews first commercial establishment opened on the same site in 1876, and was purchased by partners Harry Bailey and W. A. Massingill in 1897. A large fire on the night of May 22, 1900, destroyed much of Lakeview, and Bailey and Massingill suffered the largest financial loss in town  with the complete destruction of their store. The partners immediately rebuilt their business, opening the present building on the same site in the same year. Drawing lessons from the fire, they incorporated a unique set of fire preventive features into the new building, including metal-sheathed walls and a fire awning  that could be dropped to protect the windows and entry. With these features, the building successfully survived another large fire in 1902, and continued as one of Lakeviews most important commercial enterprises.</p><br>
<p>The store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. As of 2014, the store still operates in its historic retail function.</p><br>
<p>The Ed Eskelin Ranch is a historic residential and agricultural complex in Lake County, Oregon, United States. As a historic resource, the complex captures elements of two different phases of early 20th century settlement in the Fort Rock Basin. It represents the perseverance and resourcefulness required of modest-scale ranchers and farmers in frontier conditions and during economic hardship. Architecturally, the ranch preserves excellent examples of the construction styles and knowledge in use by common homesteaders in the period, as well as elements of the Finnish cultural heritage of the region.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The first influx of settlers began around 1909, driven by the 1909 Enlarged Homestead Act and the 1916 Stock-Raising Homestead Act, as well as Union Pacific Railroad promotion and publicity from the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition of 1905. Prominent among the settler population in this period were Finnish and Norwegian immigrant farmers including Fred Eskelin. However, many settlers were drawn by the unusually wet weather in years before 1909; when precipitation returned to its long-term, semiarid average, the large majority of settlers, including the Eskelin family, were unable to sustain agricultural operations in the dry conditions and abandoned their homesteads.</p><br>
<p>The second phase of settlement came in the 1930s with new approaches to irrigation that enabled production in the near-desert conditions of the Fort Rock Basin. During this time, Fred and Ed Eskelin returned to the basin with their families and established a well drilling business alongside their agricultural operations. They built a new homestead, with both new construction as well as salvaging materials and whole buildings from disused properties around the area. The new homestead was laid out on a plan derived from traditional compounds in Finland; this Old World design provides a last link to the ethnic character of the first phase of settlement, which was all but extinguished except for the Eskelins. The success of this new venture led to Ed Eskelin&#39;s role as a prominent citizen in the basin, and to the long-term preservation of the homestead compound.</p><br>
<p>The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.</p><br>

<p>The Auburn Post Office building is located in the City of Auburn, 20 Auburn Avenue NE at First Street NE. This is one block north Main Street, the historic business and commercial center. The main entrance is the west face on Auburn Avenue.</p><br>
<h2>Exterior</h2><br>
<p>The Post Office is a small, single-purpose building. Constructed in 1937 as a one-story building, 60.66 ft wide by 83 ft long, with a covered loading platform in back. The exterior is red brick on a poured concrete foundation with sandstone trim elements. These include a horizontal band below the cornice, and engaged sandstone piers adjacent to the main entry.</p><br>
<p>In the center of the front façade are five granite steps flanked by original wrought-iron ornamental lampposts. The wooden double entry doors have a transom windows above and large rectangular windows on either side. The remaining windows are gently arched wood windows with divided lights and poured concrete sills. Each features a soldier course of red brick at the headers.</p><br>
<p>The roof is a lateral hip, with a metal cupola featuring glass panes and a weathervane. An east-facing skylight with operable windows runs along the base of the hipped roof. The original roof was tile. A raised, covered loading dock was constructed at the rear of the building. A cornerstone on the northwest corner of the front facade provides the names of the architect and the supervising engineer, the Postmaster General, and the Secretary of the Treasury that year.</p><br>
<h2>Interior</h2><br>
<p>The building has an L-shaped lobby, 14 ft wide and 46 ft on the front and 32 ft on the back or south side. The postal clerks counter and windows ran nearly the length of the lobby with the post box area located at the south end. A full wall with grilled postal clerk windows separated the public and private functions of the post office. Interior finish materials in the lobby area included Alaskan marble wainscoting, mahogany window and door trim, and terrazzo flooring. The building contained 11 rooms, including restrooms, work rooms and Postmasters office, and a full basement with storage, fuel and boiler rooms.</p><br>
<h2>Present appearance</h2><br>
<p>The Auburn Post Office building was purchased by the King County Department of Public Health and remodeled for use as a health clinic in 1964. The exterior alterations include construction of a 19 ft long by 22 ft deep brick addition to the rear covered loading dock; construction of an ADA accessible ramp along the north side leading to a basement entrance; installation of an arched fabric awning over the primary building entrance; and the addition of new building signage. The changes are not visible from the front. The roof has been changed from tile to asphalt shingles but the original cupola still crowns the building.</p><br>
<p>The building interior was extensively remodeled in 1964. Spaces were sub-divided to create smaller offices and exam rooms, the lobby/reception area was reconfigured as the wall originally separating the post office lobby area from the back-of-the-house was removed and replaced with a reception counter, and the rear addition was added to create a nurse&#39;s work room. The buildings interior bears little resemblance to its historic use as a post office.</p><br>
<p>The Auburn Public Library is a library building located in Auburn, Washington listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>The Auburn Carnegie library is a rectangular 2-story brick building with a cast concrete foundation. It has a hip roof with a slight flare at the projecting eaves. The roof is composition tile. The building measures 35 by, and there is a 4 by extension at the center of the west facade.</p><br>
<p>The extension projects above the eaves. The gable is highlighted with a parapet trimmed with pressed metal. A 12 ft cast stone entrance arch with two panel doors in the face of the extension forms the main entry.</p><br>
<p>Fenestration consists of long casement windows in front and smaller ones on the sides and in back. Above each is a small fixed window divided by muntins into eight triangular panes.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Women volunteers promoted and staffed the early libraries of Auburn. In 1912 the city was promised $9,000 by Andrew Carnegie for a library. It opened in 1914. The land was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Authur C. Ballard, who originally had plated Auburn as the "Town of Slaughter." The donation contained a condition that the land would revert to the original owners when it ceased to be used for a library. The Carnegie building served the community for many years, but it ultimately proved too small to hold all the books and magazines it owned. In 1962 a $225,000 bond issue was approved by the voters and a new library opened in 1964. The proviso about the land being used for library purposes was then discovered and the property reverted to the Ballard family.</p><br>
<p>It is a pure example of the typical Carnegie Library and is in unaltered. The architect made a conscientious effort to incorporate all Carnegie&#39;s suggestions for library design, and all the elements of what Carnegie considered important are faithfully represented.</p><br>

<p>Patton Bridge is a bridge located in Auburn, Washington listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>The bridge spans the Green River near metropolitan Auburn, Washington. It was designed by bridge engineer and designer Homer M. Hadley. The combination of concrete and steel box girders employed in the bridge&#39;s represents a variation of the box girder bridge style. The Patton Bridge was the only structure built between 1941 and 1950, which exhibits this innovative modification of the box girder design.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Built in 1950, the Patton Bridge spans the Green River near the city of Auburn in King County, Washington. The bridge is a three-span cantilever with two anchor arms, two cantilever arms and a suspended section. It includes a combination of concrete and steel box girders. The bridge was designed by Homer M. Hadley, a consulting engineer from Washington State.</p><br>
<p>The anchor arms and cantilever arms are multiple box, two-cell reinforced concrete box girders. The suspended section consists of two spread, welded steel box girders with reinforced concrete deck. The concrete deck is fixed to the top flange plate of the girders with steel shear developers. Utilization of this deck design allows the concrete deck and steel box girders to act in composite design; i.e., the bottom flange of the steel box resists tensile forces while the concrete deck resists compressive forces.</p><br>
<p>The Patton Bridge&#39;s anchor arms are 115 ft feet long, the cantilever arms are 50 ft long, and the suspended span is 100 ft. The bridge has a total length of 430 ft. The center span of 200 ft is the longest box girder span constructed in the state during the 1940s.</p><br>

<p>Issaquah Depot is a former railway station located in Issaquah, Washington, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1889 as a passenger station and freight warehouse for the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway , serving what was then known as Gilman, Washington . The town was renamed Issaquah around the turn of the century. Only a few years after the depot&#39;s opening, in the 1890s, the SLS&E was taken over by the Northern Pacific Railway.</p><br>
<p>The Issaquah Depot&#39;s use as a passenger station ended in the 1940s, and Northern Pacific abandoned the building in 1962.</p><br>
<p>The City of Issaquah purchased the building in 1984. and was completed in the early 1990s, and the depot now operates as a museum, managed by the non-profit Issaquah Historical Museums (formerly known as the Issaquah Historical Society). The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.</p><br>
<p>The Kenimer Site is an archaeological site located on the southeast side of Brasstown Bald near Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia in White County. The site contains two earthwork mounds located on top of a natural hilltop.</p><br>
<h2>Site description</h2><br>
<p>The Kenimer site is located on an erosional remnant hill just to the north of and overlooking the Nacoochee Valley. It overlooks the junction of the Chattahoochee River and the Sautee River, which is about 1.5 km to the southeast. Mound A, the largest of the sites two mounds is 150 ft above the level of the flood plain of the rivers and approximately 1,450 ft above sea level. Georgia State Route 17 is positioned 300 m to the north of Mound A.</p><br>
<p>Because the mounds are located on an irregularly shaped natural hill their exact dimensions are hard to determine and vary from side to side. The summit of Mound A is approximately 46 m square. On its high northeastern side it is over 10 m in height and on its western side adjacent to Mound B it is 6 m in height. Mound B is located to the west of Mound A and is oriented with both mounds northwestern edges in a straight line. The summit is approximately 12 m square. The elevation varies on each side but is generally not much over 1 m in height.</p><br>
<p>The fact that the site is located on top of and utilizes an existing natural hill as part of its bulk is unusual. The only other known example in southeastern US archaeology is the Emerald Mound located near Natchez, Mississippi.</p><br>
<h2>Excavations</h2><br>
<p>The site was mapped and test excavations performed in the summer of 1997 under the direction of Mark Williams as part of the Archaeology Field School of the Department of Anthropology for the University of Georgia. Little human habitation debris was found on the mounds leading the archaeologists to conclude the site was used only for a short time and probably for ceremonial purposes as the surrounding topography would make it hard to have a village site adjacent to the mounds. Because of its unique features it is possible the site was constructed to resemble the platform mounds of the Macon Plateau area, such as Ocmulgee Site, located roughly 100 mi to the south by peoples "that did not understand the construction history or social/religious context of such features".</p><br>
<p>Some pottery and lithic debris was found at the site. All the ceramic pottery sherds found at the site dated to the Late Woodland period Napier Phase and dated to roughly 900 CE. The lithic debris found at the site was all locally available quartz and Ridge and Valley chert from the northwestern Georgia area. A small greenstone celt was found during a posthole test on the summit of Mound A.</p><br>
<h2>Controversy</h2><br>
<p>In December 2011, architect Richard Thornton writing for the content farm Examiner.com claimed that the mound was of Mayan origin. Mark Williams, an archaeologist at the University of Georgia who has spent three days surface collecting at the site, write, “The Maya connection to legitimate Georgia archaeology is a wild and unsubstantiated guess on the part of the Thornton fellow. No archaeologists will defend this flight of fancy” and via his Facebook page: "This is total and complete bunk," and "There is no evidence of Maya in Georgia."</p><br>
<p>In 2010, archaeologist Johannes Loubser wrote in a peer-reviewed journal article that the excavations at the Track Rock Archaeological Site on the opposite side of the mountain from the Kenimer Site had been halted when graves had been discovered, and the site was probably precontact. Thornton used excavations performed by Loubser as "evidence" for his theory. Upon learning this, Loubser responded, "I think that selectively presents the evidence.... But he’s a better marketer than I and other archaeologists are. When you make a claim like that, you have to back it up with hard evidence. There&#39;s a lot of opinion out there."</p><br>
<p>The Solomon S. Curry House is a private house located at 631 East McLeod Avenue in Ironwood, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1977.</p><br>
<h2>Solomon S. Curry</h2><br>
<p>Solomon S. Curry was born on June 12, 1840 in Curry Hill, Lancaster Township, Ontario, the son of Solomon Currey and Anna Southerland Wood Curry. Curry&#39;s father died six months before he was born, and his mother soon remarried, to Alexander McLeod. Curry stayed with the family until he was sixteen, at which time he moved to Potsdam, New York and apprenticed to a blacksmith for three years. He then left to work as a supply clerk for a lumbering firm from Trenton, Ontario. Curry continued in the lumber business until 1861, when emigres from the United States, moving to Canada to avoid military service in the Civil War, flooded the labor market. Curry moved on to Michigan, first to Detroit, and then up to Houghton, where he got a position at the Quincy Mining Company. Curry moved from mine to mine in the Upper Peninsula, learning the trade, and was soon in charge of a small iron mine.</p><br>
<p>In 1873, Curry moved to Ishpeming, Michigan, where he opened the Curry Mine. Curry himself moved to the Ironwood area in 1883, and was instrumental in establishing Ironwood as one of the larger cities in the area. Much of the town was laid out by Curry. Metropolitan earned a substantial profit for a number of years until the Panic of 1896, when Curry lost control of the company.</p><br>
<p>Curry was also an active politician. He also established both the First National Bank of Ironwood and the People&#39;s Bank of Ironwood, and was the first president of both institutions.</p><br>
<p>In 1867, Curry married Elizabeth Stoup of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The couple had two children: George A. Curry and Mrs. Anna (Ralph) Bartlett. Elizabeth Curry died on April 21, 1914. Curry died on July 29, 1929, and is interred in Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood.</p><br>
<h2>House History</h2><br>
<p>In 1887, fire destroyed much of the town of Ironwood. After the fire, Curry purchased land and built this house for his own use. After Curry&#39;s death in 1929, the house was used as a hospital and a nursing home. The balcony on the second floor was enclosed in 1913 and a kitchen was added to the rear in 1952. The house was later turned into an antique shop and private residence.</p><br>
<h2>House description</h2><br>
<p>The Solomon S. Curry House is a 2-1/2-story vernacular Queen Anne structure, sided with clapboard and shiplap and sitting on a concrete foundation.</p><br>
<p>Causeyville, Mississippi  is a small community in southeastern Lauderdale County, Mississippi, about twelve miles southeast of the city of Meridian. The Causeyville Historic District consists of four buildings at the center of the community–two general stores and two residences–that exemplify the pivotal contribution that small communities like Causeyville made to the development of Lauderdale County. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Established in 1833, Lauderdale County has always been one of the most prosperous counties in Mississippi. Meridian, the county seat, is located at the intersection of several major railroads and thus served as a transportation hub for early Lauderdale County. Locals in the farming and timber industries sent their products to Meridian to be loaded onto the trains and shipped to other cities.</p><br>
<p>With the exception of Meridian, Lauderdale County is mostly rural, remaining largely as it was at the turn of the 20th century and even earlier. Before automobiles and personal transportation became widespread, many of the early settlers of Lauderdale County grouped into small population clusters that relied nearly entirely on local resources, each community isolated from the others. Some communities like Causeyville had a store, and some had post offices and other infrastructural institutions, but many did not have any of these buildings.</p><br>
<p>Causeyville, named after a local family that settled the area in the 1820s, thrived in the pre-Civil War era. The community was a commercial center in southeastern Lauderdale County, and its inhabitants also produced lumber and agricultural products. Though most of the buildings that fed the local economy have long been demolished, there are pictures of an antebellum store, a cotton gin, and a sawmill used for a local logging company. The four buildings in the Causeyville Historic District were built between 1860 and 1930 and demonstrate the community&#39;s growth during that period. All four buildings are located along Causeyville Road; the two general stores are on the northern side of the road, and the two residences face the stores on the southern side. The four buildings in the district are all that remain of this economy.</p><br>
<h2>Contributing properties</h2><br>
<h3>Raynor's store</h3><br>
<p>The R.S. Raynor store is the oldest of the four buildings in the district, built around 1860, and it still retains most of its original board and batten siding. The building also retains the original design of the undercut porch, which runs along the southern and eastern sides of the buildings, although it was reconstructed in the latter half of the 20th century. It is rumored that the pine boards used to construct the inner walls of the store were cut at the sawmill that used to exist behind the store.</p><br>
<p>The building was originally a trading post between European settlers and Choctaw Indians but was repurposed to serve as a community post office in 1894. Many maps still use "Increase" for the community. When the Increase post office was discontinued in 1929, the community was officially called "Causeyville".</p><br>
<p>After T.J. Bosticks store was built in 1895, Raynors store served as a warehouse for Bosticks lumber mill and turpentine manufacturing business. During the 1920s, the original wooden roof was replaced with a tin one, which is still in place today. The building was used as a cotton warehouse in the 1930s and as an auto repair garage in the 1940s. In 1943, the original wooden floor was removed and replaced with cement, and garage doors were installed on the eastern side of the building. The garage doors were later removed when the building was repurposed yet again as the Lauderdale County Equipment Maintenance Shop throughout the 1950s and 60s, as a warehouse again between 1976 and 1983, and finally as a commercial building again after 1983. Other alterations to the original design include the addition of an interior wall to shield customers from the dust produced by the grist mill in the rear of the building and the addition of two small rooms–one at the rear of the building and the other on the western side–that served as a grist mill equipment shed and a feed storage area. The additions were built with materials similar to those used in the original design.</p><br>
<h3>T.J. Bostick's store</h3><br>
<p>The T.J. Bostick Store has sold merchandise continuously since it was built in 1895. Over its lifespan it has more than tripled in size, being home a different points throughout its history to a post office, a barbershop, a doctors office, a drug store, the town hall, a voting precinct, a Ford dealership, a residence, a feed and fertilizer storage area, a theater, and a storage area for merchandise. The post office was moved from Raynors store when Bosticks was built in 1895, and it remained in Bosticks store until 1929. The building was split into two halves in the 1930s and later recombined in 1983.</p><br>
<p>The original facade is now covered by a false front parapet on which many commercial signs have hung throughout the buildings lifetime. A room was added to the southeast corner of the house to hold the doctors office, and a covered patio previously held the grist mill now in Raynor&#39;s store. The back of the store today holds a mechanical music museum, which is home to antique music boxes, player pianos, movie posters, and other antique instruments.</p><br>
<p>Though the store originally began as a general store, it has slowly morphed into something akin to a convenient store as culture has evolved to be more automobile-centered. When the Hagwood family bought the store in 1942, their son Leslie remembers people buying an entire month&#39;s supply, but by the 1980s, that no longer happened. Hagwood told the Kentucky New Era in 1988 that the store could no longer be defined as a true country store because his main competitors were convenient stores.</p><br>
<h3>James E. Smith house</h3><br>
<p>The James E. Smith house was built in 1895 in the Queen Anne Cottage style. Smith, the houses original owner was a partner of Bosticks in his store. Smiths son, Grady W. Smith, was the first president of the East Mississippi Electric Power Association (EMEPA) and helped bring electricity to Causeyville through the Rural Electrification Act. Will Bostick, one of T.J.s sons, rented a room in the house for a few years while managing the lumbermill onsite.</p><br>
<h3>J.W. Grantham house</h3><br>
<p>When the Bosticks moved to Meridian in about 1905, J.W. Grantham bought the Bostick store as well as this house across the street from the Raynor&#39;s store. Grantham continued to operate the store until the 1930s.</p><br>
<p>The Lagan Canal was a 27 mi canal built to connect Belfast to Lough Neagh. The first section, which is a river navigation, was opened in 1763, and linked Belfast to Lisburn. The second section from Lisburn to Lough Neagh includes a small amount of river navigation, but was largely built as a canal. At its peak it was one of the most successful of the Irish canals, but ultimately it was unable to compete with road and rail transport, and the two sections were closed in 1954 and 1958. The central section from Sprucefield to Moira was destroyed by the construction of the M1 motorway in the 1960s. Responsibility for most of its remains passed first to the Department of Agriculture and then to the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, although the section between Aghalee Bridge and Lough Neagh, including the final ten locks, passed into private ownership. There is an active campaign to re-open the canal, including reinstatement of the central section.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The River Lagan at Moira is only 6 mi from Lough Neagh, the largest inland lake in the British Isles, and the terrain between the two is relatively flat. In 1637, the first suggestions that a navigable link could be constructed were made, but no action was taken at the time. Following the discovery of coal deposits in east Tyrone, which resulted in the construction of the Newry Canal, there was renewed interest, and in 1741 Arthur Dobbs, the Surveyor General, surveyed the route. Another twelve years elapsed before a petition was presented to the Irish House of Commons, which resulted in an Act of Parliament being passed on 24 October 1753 to authorise the work. The engineer Acheson Johnston estimated that making the River Lagan navigable to Moira and then building a navigable cut to Lough Neagh would cost £20,000. Since 1729, all such work was managed by the Commissioners of Inland Navigation for Ireland, but the funds at their disposal were limited. The canal was therefore funded by imposing an extra tax on alcohol sold in the districts through which the canal would pass, which amounted to one penny per gallon on ale and fourpence on spirits. The tax would last for eleven years from 1753, and on this basis, work began in 1756.</p><br>
<p>The engineer overseeing the project was Thomas Omer, and some 6 mi of river had been made navigable within the first year. The work included new cuts to remove meandering sections of the river, four locks, the removal of shoals, and the construction of a towpath. The Irish Parliament gave additional grants of £4,000 towards the project in 1759 and 1761, and the navigation was completed as far as Lisburn in 1763. A formal opening took place in September, when the Lord Hertford, a 60-ton lighter, loaded with 45 tons of coal and timber, made the journey from Belfast to Lisburn. A small additional section to Sprucefield had been completed by 1765, but work then stopped. Around £40,000 had been spent on the project, but it was evident that using the river was not ideal, as it was subject to flooding in winter, and there was a linen bleaching industry along its course, who objected to the navigation commissioners having control of the flow of the river.</p><br>
<p>In 1768, the engineer Robert Whitworth, who by this time was James Brindleys chief surveyor and draughtsman, was asked to assess the project. He reported that the river section was not suitable for navigation, and should be replaced by a canal, for which he suggested two routes and a cost of £22,000, and that beyond Sprucefield the navigation should be constructed as a canal, either on the north bank of the Lagan, or on the south, which would involve building an aqueduct at Spencers Bridge to cross the river. Although attempts were made to raise the necessary finance, and two Acts of Parliament were obtained in 1772 and 1774, to give additional powers to local commissioners, no real progress was made, and in 1779, the Company of Undertakers of the Lagan Navigation was formed. The Marquess of Donegall was the chief shareholder, and most other members were either landed gentry or drawn from the nobility, and so had considerable financial resources.</p><br>
<p>In June 1782, Richard Owen, who had worked on the construction of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal for ten years agreed to oversee the project for four years. The company had insufficient capital to build a new canal below Lisburn, nor to fund the northern route to Lough Neagh, and so construction started on the southern route. The four Union Locks raised boats from the river to a summit level, which followed a course due west, and then turned to the north west to cross the Lagan. The aqueduct cost £3,000 and took nearly three years to build. Progress was much slower than expected, but Aghalee was reached in March 1792, ten years after Owen began work. Initially, goods were transferred between the canal and the shore of the lough by road, for the final connection was not completed until December 1793. The Marquess of Donegall opened the canal on 1 January 1794, by travelling from Owen&#39;s house at Moira to Lough Neagh by boat. He had funded most of the £62,000 cost himself. The summit level was 11 mi long, with a flight of 10 locks, each 70 by at Aghalee, and four at Sprucefield.</p><br>
<h3>Operation</h3><br>
<p>The canal was not as successful as expected. There were problems with water supply on the summit level, because water from the Lagan was needed by the bleaching industry further down the river, and so could not be used indiscriminately. Below Lisburn, there were often problems where excess water during periods of high rainfall washed away the new banks. The Union Locks were not completed, and work continued until 1796, while it was suggested that Owen had prolonged the work for his own benefit. John Dubourdieu, writing in 1802, concluded that the use of the river was a fatal flaw, and that the navigation would have been much better if the lower section had been built as a canal to the same standard as the upper section. The canal had been planned to enable coal from the east Tyrone coalfields to reach Belfast, but in practice, higher quality coal was imported through Belfast and distributed to the communities around the canal and Lough Neagh.</p><br>
<p>A group of businessmen from Belfast took over the canal in 1810. They investigated costs for a new canal section from Belfast to Union Locks. Owen estimated that it would cost £42,425, and an application was made for half of this amount to the Directors General of Inland Navigation. They sent John Killaly to report on the plans, who suggested a new canal section from the Blackstaff river to the second lock, to avoid the tidal section near to Belfast. Owens and Killalys ideas formed the basis for an Act of Parliament obtained in 1814, but the proposals to split the navigation channel from the river and to build a reservoir at Broadwater near Aghalee to supply the summit level were never implemented. However, improvements were made, towpaths were created, and traffic increased, although there were still some water supply problems. The canal did not make a profit, and when the Exchequer Bill Loan Commissioners refused to make a loan to fund the work, the likelihood of a new canal at the lower end receded.</p><br>
<p>In the 1820s and 1830s, there was competition on short-haul traffic from the road network, but it was hoped that the construction of the Ulster Canal, linking Lough Neagh to Lough Erne and the River Shannon, would create long-haul traffic. The Directors General of Inland Waterways were replaced by the Board of Public Works, and although they took control of the Tyrone Navigation in 1831 and the Ulster Canal in 1851, there was local opposition to them taking over the Lagan Canal. The old company was replaced by the Lagan Navigation Company in 1843, to ensure that the canal was maintained in good order, but the Board of Public Works supervised its activities quite closely. They successfully competed with the Ulster Railway, which had reached Portadown in 1842, and ploughed all profits back into improvements until 1859, when they announced a first dividend of one per cent. The canal was one of only two inland waterways in the north of Ireland that was commercially successful. Dividends gradually increased, and by the 1870s, traffic figures were more than double those of the 1830s.</p><br>
<p>The condition of the Ulster Canal worried the Lagan Navigation Company, as almost no trade passed between the two. This was not helped by the fact that the locks on the Ulster Canal were narrower, and the depth over the cills was less, so that Lagan boats could not work the canal, and goods had to be transshipped. Although the Board of Public Works controlled the Ulster Canal, and had spent £20,000 on it since they took control in 1865, no additional traffic had been generated. Between 1878 and 1880, the Lagan Canal built five boats which could work through both canals. The Lagan Canal was persuaded to take over the Ulster Canal and the Coalisland Canal or Tyrone Navigation in 1888. Although they spent a great deal on improvements, the additional canals remained in a poor state and continued to make a loss. The Lagan itself was maintained well, and traffic rose from 153,000 tons in 1893 to 170,000 tons in 1898.</p><br>
<h3>Decline</h3><br>
<p>During the First World War, traffic dropped by half, but after hostilities ended, the government returned the canal to private ownership, some £20,000 was spent on repairs, and traffic flourished. In the 1920s, traffic from Belfast to Lisburn averaged 307,033 tons of coal and 19,126 tons of other goods. Traffic above Lisburn was much lower, but some coal continued to reach the Ulster Canal until it was closed in 1931. There were large cargoes of sand and gravel travelling in the opposite direction, originating on the east Tyrone shores of Lough Neagh, and used for building projects in Belfast. The years immediately before the Second World War saw a collapse in commercial canal traffic. Downstream traffic dropped from 29,000 tons to 600 tons between 1931 and 1941, while upstream traffic dropped from 87,000 tons to 28,000 tons. The canals were thought to be too slow, compared to roads and railways.</p><br>
<p>With their funds exhausted, the company considered closure of their canal and the Coalisland Canal. However, there was a clause in the Act of Parliament from 1843 which stated that if the canals became unnavigable, the Lagan Navigation Company would automatically cease to exist. Rather than create an awkward political situation, where the Ministry of Commerce inherited canals that were already defunct, the government made payments to the company to cover operating losses and some repairs to the infrastructure. Between 1938 and 1952, these payments amounted to £130,000. There had been no traffic above Lisburn since 1947, and the Ministry of Commerce announced that the canals would close in the spring of 1954. The Inland Navigation Act (NI) was passed in April 1954, and the Coalisland Canal, the Upper Bann Navigation and the Lagan Canal above Lisburn were closed. Below Lisburn, the canal remained open for another four years, but was closed on 1 July 1958. In 1965, some 7.7 mi of the central section, between Moira and Sprucefield, were destroyed by the building of the M1 motorway along its route.</p><br>
<h2>Restoration</h2><br>
<p>There are proposals to restore the canal, to once again provide a navigable link between Belfast and Lough Neagh. Initially, a steering group was formed, with representatives from local councils, user groups and central government. The Lagan Canal Restoration Trust was a logical development of this group, and was formed as a company limited by guarantee in 2008 with representatives from the four councils which administer the areas through which the canal runs, and six other key partners, including the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure, and the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland. There are also representatives from other groups with an interest in the area.</p><br>
<p>As part of the assessment process, a feasibility study was carried out by Fergus and McIlveen of Belfast. It concluded that even though parts of the route have been destroyed by the building of the M1 motorway, there were no insurmountable barriers to restoring the canal, which "has the potential to become one of the most significant recreational waterways in these islands." A small section of the canal near Lisburn Civic Centre, which includes lock 12, has been restored to navigable condition, and there are three major sections of towpath which can now be accessed by the public. All of the locks and many of the other structures associated with the canal are scheduled monuments, which gives them some protection.</p><br>
<p>A proposal for a £2.5 million scheme to build a new lock, weir and footbridge at Stranmillis Gateway, at the site of the original first lock, has been planned and is undergoing an economic appraisal. The project will include restoration of the second lock at Corby Wood. Lock 3 at Newforge has been restored, together with the lock keeper&#39;s cottage, with funding provided by the Heritage Fund, the Lottery Partnership Scheme and the Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure. An 0.95 mi stretch of the towpath has been reopened at Aghagallon, following work by Craigavon Borough Council to obtain access rights. Since the closure of the canal, the section between Aghalee and Lough Neagh has been privately owned, and this is the first part of that section where public access has been restored.</p><br>
<p>The Yellala Falls  are a series of waterfalls and rapids on the Congo River just upstream from Matadi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.</p><br>
<p>The falls are the lowest of a long series of rapids that render the river unnavigable, forcing colonial explorers to travel by foot as far as the Stanley Pool 350 km upstream.</p><br>
<p>The Congo is the third largest river in the world by volume of water discharged, and the deepest in the world. The section of river that ends with the Yellala falls has over 300 species of fish, many found nowhere else.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The region drained by the Congo River covers one eighth of Africa, including both tropical rain forest and savanna, much of it in a huge, shallow basin. The present system of rivers seems to date from around five million years ago, not long ago on a geological time scale. At that time the Atlantic continental margin was lifted up and formed a barrier between the basin and the sea. A large lake formed before the Congo River broke through this barrier, running through a narrow, rocky channel about 350 km long from Kinshasa to Matadi. The river is navigable both above and below this stretch, called the lower Congo.</p><br>
<p>The upper portion of the Lower Congo starts with the steep Livingstone Falls just below Kinshasa and continues for 133 km through a number of smaller rapids. The central portion of about 129 km is navigable, at times lake-like and at times narrow and as deep as 200 m. The lower portion of about 88 km is the steepest, with huge rapids at the Inga Falls and again at the Yellala falls, after which the river is navigable to the ocean.</p><br>
<p>About 1,250,000 cuft of water flows over the falls each second.</p><br>
<h2>First European discovery</h2><br>
<p>The Yellala Falls were reached by Europeans as early as 1485, when the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão took a group of men as far as the falls before they were forced to turn back by disease, probably malaria. In that place he set a padrão, a large stone cross-shaped marker, customary during the Portuguese Age of Discovery. The stone, which was not rediscovered until 1911, bears the words: "Aqui chegaram os navios do esclarecido rei D.João II de Portugal - Diogo Cão, Pero Anes, Pero da Costa." ("Here arrived the ships of illustrious John II, King of Portugal – Diogo Cão, Pero Anes, Pero da Costa".)</p><br>
<h2>Later European visitors and descriptions</h2><br>
<p>Captain James Hingston Tuckey visited in 1816. He said that the local people thought the falls were the residence of an evil spirit, and that anyone who saw them would never see them again. Visiting in the dry season, he was disappointed by the falls. He described the site as comprising a large hill of syenite, a course-grained igneous rock, on the south side. The northern side, made of the same material, was not as high, but steeper than the south. He described the river as having forced its course and within the middle of the river an island of slate "still defies its power, and breaks the current into two narrow channels; that near the south side gives vent to a great mass of water, over which the torrent rushes with great fury and noise, as may easily be conceived".</p><br>
<p>Tuckey, who was sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society of London to obtain information on the slave trade, noted the brutality of the Portuguese slave trade and gathered valuable information about the geography, animals, plants, minerals and people of the region.</p><br>
<p>Talking of the people who lived above the falls, Tuckey said that fowls, eggs, manioc and fruits were the property of women. The items were never dealt with by the men without a discussion with their wives. Beads were given as presents from the men.</p><br>
<p>In 1848 the Hungarian Lazzlo Magyar ascended the Congo to the Yellala falls, before spending five years exploring the region to the south. Due to his lack of contact with the outside world, the valuable information that he gathered received little circulation.</p><br>
<p>Sir Richard Francis Burton, who first saw the falls in 1863, wrote a description of the great Yellala. Waves developed in the course of the river "for a mile and a half above". Afterwards, the water heads down a slope of around thirty feet "in 300 yards, spuming, colliding and throwing up foam, which looks dingy white against the dull yellow-brown of the less disturbed channel - the movement is that of waves dashing upon a pier". He went on: "The old river-valley, shown by the scarp of the rocks, must have presented gigantic features, and the height of the trough-walls, at least a thousand feet, gives the Yellala a certain beauty and grandeur. The site is apparently the highest axis of the dividing ridge separating the maritime lowlands from the inner plateau".</p><br>
<p>The explorer Henry Morton Stanley, who visited the falls on April 6, 1880, wrote that over a five or six mile stretch the incline was only 45 ft, but that the "general fury of the water is caused by the obstructions which the giant volume meets in the bed of the narrow defile." Sir Harry Johnston, who visited the falls in 1883, called the river "the last grand fall of Yellala" and detailed the sight and sounds of his impression of the falls.</p><br>
<h2>Ecological importance</h2><br>
<p>The Yellala Falls and the other falls and rapids upstream have largely isolated the aquatic fauna of the Congo Basin for around five million years, a significant period on an evolutionary timescale.</p><br>
<p>The cichlid genera Steatocranus, Nanochromis, Lamprologus and Teleogramma are found only in the Congo basin. Several dozen species in these genera are found only in the lower Congo. Steatocranus are rheophilic, meaning they have adapted to living in fast water. The four species of Teleogramma are found only in the lower Congo rapids. Genetically distinct populations have been found on opposite sides of the river. Although only 1 mi apart, powerful currents that may exceed 30 mph have prevented interbreeding.</p><br>
<p>Polly Bemis House was the home of Idaho County, Idaho pioneers Charles Bemis and his wife Polly Bemis, who lived alongside the Salmon River in the late 19th and early 20th century. Polly was a Chinese American former teenage slave whose story became a biographical novel and was fictionalized in the 1991 film A Thousand Pieces of Gold.</p><br>
<h2>History and background</h2><br>
<p>Charlie and Polly Bemis were among the first pioneers to settle along the Salmon River (The River of No Return), only several yards from the riverside. Even today this house is not accessible by road; boats are a common means of access. In 1923, Peter Klinkhammer and Charlie Shepp, who lived on the other side of the Salmon River on the east side of the confluence of Crooked Creek, helped Polly to rebuild a new home in the same spot as the one that burned down. Except for a short stay in Warren, Idaho, she lived there until 1933, when she moved to Grangeville, Idaho, dying shortly thereafter.</p><br>
<p>The Polly Bemis House is located 44 mi east of Riggins, Idaho, and 17 mi north of Warren, Idaho.</p><br>
<p>The house meets two criteria of the National Register of Historic Places: criterion A for its connection with the social history of Chinese women in Idaho and criterion C as an excellent example of wooden logs and shingles construction and of the gable-front single-pen dwellings used in the central Idaho mountains. Some stone was also used in its construction. Chinese miners made up almost half the population of this region during the late 1800s but suppression forced most to move to Chinatowns on the west coast. Few records exist of most of them, but there are many documents about Polly, making her home and experience significant.</p><br>
<p>It is now part of the 26 acre non-profit Polly Bemis Ranch.</p><br>
<p>The home of Klinkhammer and Shepp is now a guest ranch known as Shepp Ranch.</p><br>
<p>Lewisville Park is a 154-acre regional park located two miles north of Battle Ground in Clark County, Washington. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The park was built starting in 1936 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) recreational center project. The architecture and overall design of the park is intentionally rustic, a common idiom promoted by federal land management agencies in the early part of the 20th century. Lewisville park is the oldest in the county park system and is one of the most significant and lasting examples of the WPA in Clark County.</p><br>
<p>Several of the existing structures were built by WPA workers between 1936 and 1940 and were still existing when the park was added to the national register, including a caretaker&#39;s cottage, bathhouse, kitchen, one large and two small shelters. All were built to appear non-intrusive and used local logs and rocks in their construction. Several other buildings, not a part of the historic register list, were built in the 1950s and 1960s and maintained the natural aesthetic designs of the existing structures.</p><br>
<h2>Present day</h2><br>
<p>Facilities include: Swimming hole (no lifeguard on duty), nature trails, playgrounds, tennis/basketball court and sports fields, fishing, and other facilities typical of large regional asset parks.</p><br>
<p>The Amboy United Brethren Church, also known as the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Dora Young Chapel, is an historical church located at 21416 NE 399th Street, in Amboy, Washington.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Built in 1910 by Emanuel Jensen in Gothic Revival style, the church was erected on a property given to the congregation by Emily Holcomb. The church was formally dedicated by Rev. Dora Young, Rev. J.L. Garret and Rev. D.L. Peterson on September 25, 1910. Due to the growing congregation, in 1936 the church was raised to install a full basement which provided meeting space, restrooms and a kitchen area. In 1946 the congregation&#39;s name was changed to the "Evangelical United Brethren Church" due to the merge of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ with the Evangelical Church. In the 1950s the church steeple was removed and by 1966 the membership had become fragmented and the building was showing signs of decay. The church was closed that same year and became a private property. In 1988 the building was offered to a group of volunteers who started a fundraising project to create a museum in the building. The North Clark Historical Museum opened on June 24, 2000. Displays include antiques and household items, photos, agriculture tools and equipment, American Indian culture, pioneer heritage and logging.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.</p><br>
<p>The Farrell Building, also known as the Golden Rule Store, J.C. Penny, the Fashionette and Farrell & Eddy Department Store, is a historic commercial building located at 305 Northeast 4th Avenue in Camas, Washington. The two-story building was completed for Charles Farrell by the local builder John Roffler in 1924 in the early commercial style of architecture. The building replaced a previous 1887 structure which was demolished. The downstairs space was rented to the chain store "The Golden Rule", which later became the "J.C. Penny Company". Rose Farrell, Charles Farrel&#39;s widow, and her sister Anna Roffler Eddy moved their "The Fashionette" store in the building in 1935. In 1955, the Farrell Building was closed for modernization in an effort to keep up with other newer department stores. At</p><br>
<p>the time of its closure in 1998, the building and business was under the ownership of a third generation of the Farrell family.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 2006.</p><br>
<p>The John P. and Mary Kiggins House is a 2.5-story craftsman style house located in Vancouver, Washington. The house was constructed in 1907 for John P. Kiggins, a Vancouver businessman and theater owner who served nine terms as mayor and sponsored many civic improvement projects. The architect and builder of the house are unknown, although Kiggins was trained as a building contractor and may have built the house himself.</p><br>
<p>The Kiggins family owned the house until 1994. At that time it was sold and converted to office space, although much of the original details were preserved.</p><br>
<p>The site of original construction was East Evergreen Boulevard and C Street, but a 2008 downtown redevelopment plan, including a new community library, required that the Kiggins house be moved. After considerable preparation, the house was moved to 24th and H Streets in the Arnada neighborhood.</p><br>
<p>The Slocum House is a Victorian style house located in Vancouver, Washington, in the United States. The style also has been called Carpenter Victorian to emphasize both the vertical, Italianate features and the skill of craftsmanship, believed to be the work of Edward Slocum, brother of the owner. Ornamental medallions inside the house were signed and included patent dates from 1842 and 1846, although the house is believed by some to have been constructed in 1867. The 1867 date is not supported by local newspaper reports as there was no dwelling on the land at this time, and Charles W. Slocum was still busy in other areas of the Pacific Northwest. However many websites and reference books do mention the 1867 date, perhaps using a common source.</p><br>
<p>After returning to Vancouver, Washington Territory in 1869, Slocum became interested in building a mansion in the vicinity of downtown Vancouver. The foundation was laid in May 1877, further progress despite "its large dimensions, and the substantial character of the materials and work" was reported in late June 1877, and work was completed by the beginning of 1878. When completed and unveiled to society on New Year&#39;s Day in 1878, the local paper described it as follows:</p><br>
<p>Mr. and Mrs. Charles Slocum received their friends at their elegant new home on New Year&#39;s day. They have now finished and nearly furnished one of the handsomest residences in Washington Territory. For completeness, neatness, convenience, and architectural beauty, it discounts any house we know of in the country. Their friends are glad to see them so agreeably situated.</p><br>
<p>Charles W. Slocum had been trained as a carpenter in Rhode Island, and in 1857 he arrived in Vancouver and worked as a carpenter at the Vancouver Barracks. Later, he became superintendent of the barracks. In 1860, Slocum opened several general stores in the Pacific Northwest. He is credited with platting the town of Boise, Idaho, in 1863.</p><br>
<p>The Slocum House is the only surviving structure in its former residential neighborhood of the Vancouver historic core. It was moved one block from its original location in 1966 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.</p><br>
<p>The Commerce Building is a building located in Everett, Washington, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and included in the Hewitt Avenue Historic District. The five-story structure was built in 1910 at a cost of $100,000. The building was designed by noted local architect Benjamin Franklin Turnbull who was responsible for several other commercial buildings in Everett as well as numerous residential structures. Turnbulls office was located in the building from 1910 until 1927, when his career in Everett drew to a close. Office spaces predominated on the buildings second through fourth floors, while the top floor was occupied by the Everett Business School. The building was vacant at the time of its nomination to the National Register in 1992. Beginning in 1993, it became an affordable housing community with 48 assisted studio rental units. It is managed by the non-profit organization Housing Hope.</p><br>
